Judith’s Corner - February, 2004

For the first time, I have more articles for the newsletter than I can get into one issue and one 37 cent stamp. So much has happened in the last 30 days that deserves a mention, and we have submissions on more topics than we can fit into our three pages. I love having this problem to complain about!

Odd Newsletter Fact: Remember that underwater rose stem cutter that I've mentioned in previous issues? It's a nifty little gizmo, called Aqua-Blum, for the home rosarian, and we encouraged the Botanical Garden gift shop to sell it locally. Well, if you search Google for the product, as a woman in Oregon did recently, the second search result about the cutter is a referral to the GVRS newsletter articles about Aqua-Blum! I found this out when the Oregon woman e-mailed me with an offer to buy three of the cutters. I referred her to the gift shop, and was amused to think just how widely the Internet connects us all, however obscure the reference.

Mary Mastin, Nancy Anderies, and Wanda Smith-Valencia did a fabulous job with the GVRS booth at Landscapes West . You can see a great photo of the booth, taken by Phil Frisk, on our website at: www.gvrs.org/news.htm.

Phil and Judy Frisk are both artists, and you can see their work at: http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/friskart/.

The two most frequently asked questions at our booth were about the when and how of pruning. We don't prune our roses here before April 15th, and we will have several opportunities for people to practice before they prune their own roses. Stay tuned.

Members Torri Junge, who is taking on the Bloomin' Deals project this year, and her husband Brad, have submitted our first official ad in this newsletter. We are happy to share a generous offer with our members.

February 24th, the date of our upcoming Program Meeting, is also Nancy Anderies' birthday--she'll be 104. Kidding. She's really 45. We'll be annoying her with singing at the Program. Bring your pitch pipes!

Oh yeah--we made it in to the Free Press earlier this month--that’s twice this year! Go to www.gjfreepress.com to read back issues. Check out www.gvrs.org for back issues of this newsletter. Later--Judith
