Everything's Coming Up Rose Show! It turns out that showing roses is sort of like dressing for the Prom. Sure, every girl is beautiful in her own way, and every boy is handsome--so, too, are all roses lovely. Once in a while, though, roses, like people, can be dressed up--everyone, and every rose, can use a little smoke and mirrors to smooth off the rough edges. It's Prom-time for roses--GVRS's 4th annual Rose Show is about to take place! This year's theme for the Rose Show is "Not Your Mother's Rose Show!" We chose this theme because we've been making this rose show thing up as we've gone along these last three years, and we haven't always been sticklers for rigid interpretations of the rules. Our "traditions" haven't come from long experience with other rose shows, or from any understanding of the traditions of other rose societies. We can't help but wonder what someone from another, established, rose society might think if they attended our Rose Show, so our theme alerts them to the possibility of something different on the horizon. There will be three opportunities to attend a rose show training session before the Rose Show this year. What kind of training will you get? Rose presentation, of course. You'll learn how to choose a winning rose from your garden--how to see each rose's award-winning potential. You'll be taught the guidelines for vases, stem lengths, bloom stages, arrangements, and makeup tricks for bringing out each rose's best features. You read that right--make up tricks. Training sessions will take place on Tuesday, May 25th (our Program meeting) at the Botanical Gardens; Friday evening, May 28th at 7PM at the Social Hall at Mesa State (11th and North), and again on the morning of the show itself. We will also be talking about the rose show with the Western Colorado Gardening Foundation (see below) on Sat., May 29th, at 10AM.
